This is a spectacular oil on canvas, done during the mid to late Victorian era. The dark composition stands out dramatically against the light, gold-flecked, gesso-on-wood frame. The reverse of the frame is marked "Made in Holland" and the canvas is from a Baltimore shop. We could find no signature by the artist. The frame is in good condition; being in particular need of a cleaning, there are also a couple of minor cracks in the surface. Along one side, not visible from the front, is a 2 inch by 1/8 inch bit of frame missing. The oil is in very good condition. There is one repair, which is seen only when the back is inspected and the canvas patch is noted. There are no holes and no other repairs; and there are no losses of pigment. The frame measures 19 1/2 inches by 15 1/2 inches by 1 1/2 inches. The interior frame measurement is 15 1/2 inches by 11 1/2 inches. This framed antique oil painting weighs 2 pounds, 10 ounces.
