This unusual, figural, or character jar is that of a round, old man with a cigar hanging from his mouth. He is hand-painted and tin-glazed Majolica. We believe his purpose was to store tobacco, or possibly to be used as a cache pot for masculine items. With the lid in place, he stands 6 inches high and is 4 1/4 inches wide. The condition is excellent, with no chips or cracks. There is some light crazing noted on the interior of the lid, but nowhere else. The base is marked simply, "Austria." We believe this item dates from the early 20th century. It weighs 15 ounces.
