This is a matching pair of 8 1/2 inch wide plates manufactured by James and Ralph Clews of Cobridge, Staffordshire England. Their mark, with a crown, is impressed on the reverse of each plate, dating them to circa 1820. They are both in excellent condition. There are no chips or cracks. There are one or two tiny glaze flakes lost from the outside rim, and only the lightest and faintest of crazing on either one. As can be seen in the photo, there is a narrow fissure in the earthenware, which is only visible on one side of the plate and which was a manufacturing blemish. The borders are beautifully sculpted with flowers and the highlight is the hand-painted lime green accents against the rich cream ground. Both plates together weigh 1 pound, 5 ounces.
