This very early form of lighting would have been used in Europe and America in the 18th and 19th century. This particular item is of solid brass, has a lid that swivels on the upwardly curved shaft, and has a rest for the wick. It would have burned animal fat or whale oil. This lamp also has a long hook, for hanging. It measures 4 7/8 inches long, 3 1/4 inches wide, and 3 3/4 inches tall. The rod with the hook adds 6" more to the height when outstretched. The condition is very good, with no holes, breaks or repairs. It is unsigned. This item weighs 10.5 ounces.
